Fadeout Review

Jan Solvang has spent her life avoiding conflict and commitment. Six months ago, she left a marriage proposal and a job in Seattle to care for her dying mother. Now she feels trapped in California with an inherited dog, working with her estranged father as a memorial event planner. Scriptwriter Roman Keller thrives on conflict. His documentaries reveal the flaws of the famous. Jan's challenge is to help him write a positive eulogy for a grandfather he despised, but Roman is more interested in her other client: a powerful attorney with a dark past his family wants buried with him. If Jan stands behind the family and Roman goes for the expose, who wins? The tension between them grows as each discovers the other is keeping secrets. Will the truth destroy their chance at love?

FADEOUTFADEOUT by Rolynn Anderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a beautiful story though not what I expected. By the blurb, I thought it would be comical. I mean, fainting disorder? That screams humor to me. Instead, the humor was more subtle, mostly brought out with Roman, who is very loveable and unique. I say he is loveable because any man who realizes their mistakes and mans up to them gets points in my book. I found more mystery and serious drama, almost heart wrenching, than the lighthearted romance I was expecting. Still, it’s an excellent story that runs very deep with themes, characterizations, and understanding of the human condition. It’s very well-written and kept me interested the whole way through. I won this book in a contest and was very excited to read it. Loved it!

Silver Lake Review

Rain Anderson can't decide which is more unsettling--encountering the ghost of her missing friend, or reuniting with the man whose love she foolishly rejected. But one thing is certain: the past has come back to haunt her, quite literally.

Five years ago, Rain's tight-knit group of high school friends unraveled when one vanished during their senior year. Now, a parent's deathbed request has reunited the friends at Silver Lake, including Jason Lansing, the man Rain discarded.

Rain and Jason discover the powerful attraction between them has survived, but though Jason is willing to forgive, he can't let himself forget. The possibility of falling for Rain again is too risky.

Slamming doors, crashing objects, flaring fires--clearly the ghost has a message to share. As Rain and Jason struggle to unravel the truth, they must face a desperate spirit in need of help--and a burning passion that refuses to die.

Hauntingly good!

This mystery is wonderfully crafted with lots of romance mixed in. The characters are realistic and brave. The plot and pacing kept me intrigued throughout and I got serious chills in spots. I found myself really pulling for the main characters to get together. It was a fabulous journey!

This is an adult book and if you like vampires and twisted erotica, you’ll like this. This is the first book I’ve read from this author. The characters and plot are well-developed and it is well-written. It’s not steamy, hot erotica but it has a decent story that I really enjoyed. It managed to hold a pleasing level of romance, and I was happy with the length and the ending.

And now for the interview...

Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself. What do you do for fun?

Hmmm...  Fun.  Well, I love to travel.  So, if I’m not traveling in the United States or in Europe, I’m planning a trip somewhere...which is half the fun.  Hence the name of my blog “Will Travel for Romance.”  ;-)  Some people know this and some people don’t, but in the spring of 2009, I shucked it all—job, house, furniture—bought an RV, told my significant other we were going (okay, not all that easily), and crisscrossed the country for the next few years living full-time in the RV.  I worked summers at Glacier National Park (ranger hat and all), and wintered on the Gulf Coast and wrote books.  I left “the road” because I wanted to return to work so I could have more money to see my grandchildren, but I really long to return to the life.  Maybe six months of the year this time though!

Q: What do you like most about the genre you write in?

I write in a variety of different genres—contemporary, light paranormal fantasy (lovelorn ghosty stuff a la “Ghost and Mrs. Muir”), romantic suspense, and time travel.  Time travel is my favorite, but sometimes when I start a time travel, a different story emerges, and I feel I have to follow the story rather than try to mold it to my wishes.  Not that I haven’t tried!  J  I love time travels because I love the juxtaposition of modern and historic, whether the time traveler comes forward or goes back in time.  It is challenging though...for historical accuracy if nothing else.

Q: Where is your favorite place to write?

My bedroom.  I always have an oversize easy chair that I can plop into.  In October, my new house was finally finished, and I have a sitting room in my bedroom that looks out over a river.  How fabulous is that???  It’s the reason I bought the house!

Q: What’s your next project?

A time travel.  I’m just at this moment starting it—I mean, I just wrote Chapter One yesterday.  I thought I might set it in the small town in which I live (I’m not originally from the area), with the river playing a key “character” as do many of my landscapes, but I’m finding very little in the way of historical documentation in this little town.  It’s out there, just not on the Internet, so I’m off to the local library to borrow one of two books on the area.  The hardest question to answer right now is...did the river look the way it did in the late 1800s or early 1900s (my favorite time travel eras)?

Q: How do you feel about Dr. Pepper?

I quite drinking caffeinated drinks in 1998 because I thought they were making me temperamental.  However, when I was a 14 yo teenager, my best friend, Candy, and I, used to scrounge around in her house and back yard for change people dropped, and she and I would head down to our favorite Mexican restaurant (on foot), and order up a cheese crisp and two Dr. Peppers.  I also drank Dr. Peppers with my tacos from Taco Bell.  Dr. Pepper will forever be associated with Mexican food to me!  J

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Lisa, and thanks for the questions.

Thanks for being here, Bess. I loved having you!

Incredible Dreams Book Blast

Incredible DreamsIncredible Dreams

INCREDIBLE DREAMS is the story of a modern-day ghost whisperer who travels through time to save the life of a WWII fighter pilot and ends up jeopardizing her own existence.

Izzy Miller prefers to call herself a spiritual therapist because she thinks it makes her sound more professional than plain old ghost-whisperer. She expects her latest project to be quick and easy because exorcising military personnel is pretty routine. But there's nothing easy or routineabout Captain Jack Baker--he's a rather forgetful spirit and somewhat mischievous. And even though he's intrigued by the US Government's latest attempt to remove him from the only place he can ever remember being...he has no intentions of going anywhere.

Plans to exorcise Jack are quickly sidelined when Izzy discovers a portal into the past inside her dreams and sets out to change his fate. Trouble is...when she gets back there, she can't remember anything but her name. She still sees ghosts, but is far less accepting of her gift. And, to make matters worse, a demonic force pretending to be the forgetful heroine's sister has her own plans--to steal Izzy's soul.

Welcome Vonnie Davis

You won't believe this email. I'm sitting in a French safe house, eating caviar and drinking champagne with a handsome government agent, Niko Reynard. He's wearing nothing but silk pajama bottoms and mega doses of sex appeal. I'm in big trouble, little sister. He's kissed me several times and given me a foot massage that nearly caused spontaneous combustion. I'm feeling strangely virginal compared to the sexual prowess this thirty-year-old man exudes.
When I came to Paris for a bit of adventure, I never imagined I'd foil a bombing attempt, karate-kick two men, and run from terrorists while wearing a new pair of stilettos. I've met a German musician, a gay poet from Australia, and the most delightful older French woman.
Don't worry. I'm safe--the jury's still out on yummy Niko, though. The more champagne I drink, the less reserved I feel. What an unforgettable fortieth birthday!

Niko perched on the stool at Alyson’s feet, opened the first box and deftly flicked back the tissue paper on a pair of black kidskin pumps with skinny gold looking heels. “It’s rumored Da Vinci invented the high heel.” He removed her Birckenstocks and placed her bare foot on his thigh. Warmth from his muscled leg flowed up hers, causing her foot to give an involuntary wiggle.
His gaze lifted to hers and locked. Slowly he slid his hand from her heel up her leg to cup her calf. Thank God she shaved her legs that morning. “Stop.” The rawness of her voice surprised her. His touch made her very aware of her body, and her body was very aware of him. She couldn’t count the years since she was touched in such a manner—if ever.
Still, it was nice to know she could respond to a man’s touch. Thanks to her ex-husband’s avoidance, she thought herself sexually dead, certainly sexually unappealing.
“High heels do wonders for a woman’s figure, Aly. They make the legs look long and shapely, lift the bottom and make the hips sway.” His hands moved in a descriptive manner while he talked. “They make a woman look sexy and confident. Men’s eyes naturally pivot to a woman in stilettos.” Niko shrugged. “We can’t help it. We are men, after all. Weakened by women.”
Alyson stared at him. Men made weak by women? She’d never heard such talk, especially from a male, a very virile male if looks meant anything. He was gorgeous, arrogant as all get out, but gorgeous just the same.
Niko slipped the shoes onto her feet, stood and extended his hand. “Stand. See how you like the feel.” His gaze focused on hers again and for a second or two, when she looked into his eyes, her world stopped.
She vetoed the four-inch stilettos Niko favored in five painful, toe-pinching steps. Good Lord, a girl could get nosebleeds in those things.
Ten minutes later, Alyson wobbled in front of the cashier ready to pay for the black kidskin three-inch Pradas she wore. As soon as she saw the bow at the back of the heel, she fell in love with the shoes. Gwen called her a “bow freak.” When Niko reached for his wallet, she elbowed him. “Look, as long as they take Visa, I’ll pay for my own shoes.”
“Please, allow me.”
“Absolutely not. I planned on having an expensive birthday meal at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant tomorrow. With all that’s happened today, that plan is ruined, too. So I’m rationalizing since I won’t be paying for my birthday meal, I can pay this ungodly amount for the shoes.”
Niko placed his hand over hers. “I don’t mind. Let me treat you since I goaded you into buying them.”
“Really, that’s not necessary. Even my husband…er…ex-husband never bought me things. I’ve always paid my own way.”
He leaned an elbow on the glass counter and looked at her. “You’re kidding me. He never bought you little surprises? Little treats? A woman like you should be spoiled, treasured—” his voice lowered as he slowly trailed a finger up her arm  “—loved often and well.” Merciful heavens, he was trying to seduce her in a shoe store. Gwen would squeal in delight when she told her about this.
“Down, buster. American women are different than French women. We’re not so easily seduced by glib words or smooth moves.”
His eyebrow arched and his demeanor turned insolent. “You think I’m trying to seduce you?”
Typical male. He touched her almost nonstop since they stepped into Minelli’s. Now that she called him on it, he wanted to deny everything. “I think you’re toying with me, seeing if you can make an old, lonely American woman quiver at your feet.”
“First of all, you’re not old. Second, if you’re lonely, that’s your fault. Third, if I wanted to make you quiver—” he leaned in, his lips against her ear  “—I damn well could.”

Now for the interview...

Welcome Vonnie Davis!

Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself. What do you do for fun?

I’m a retired technical writer who has a case of arrested development. I started college at 44, found the love of my life at 55 and had my first book published at 63. I’m just a tad slower at achieving milestones than others. I live in southern Virginia with my husband, who also writes, and one spoiled cat. We enjoy traveling—my husband and I, not the cat.

Q: What do you like most about the genre you write in?

I love romance; it’s what I read 95% of the time. I love the sensual dance two people do as they waltz toward their happily-ever-after. Romances are stories of hope and escapism. Don’t we all hope we find that special someone? Don’t we all need to escape from the drudgery and problems of everyday life?

My problem is I don’t know which sub-genre of romance to stick to. I write contemporary, historical and romantic suspense—and thanks to a pair of glowing, golden eyes, I also write paranormal. There’s a story behind that I’d like to share for I never thought I’d have the imagination to write paranormal.

About a month after I had a cancerous cyst removed from my saliva gland, I began to see two glowing spots in the back of my mind. Cancer, I thought. After their constant presence for two weeks, I was about to call the doctor to make an appointment, when the golden spots blinked. Eyes, I thought. Those are eyes? They stared and me, blinking from time to time. Watching…waiting…willing me to comment.

Then one night, a bear took shape at the foot of my bed and he had those same golden, glowing eyes. I wasn’t alarmed since this is how all my heroes come to me, late at night when I’m in that fluttery, fragile state between wakefulness and sleep (I’m telling you, folks, the men just won’t leave me alone! And as soon as you’re through laughing over that bit of nonsensical bragging, read on…).

I studied the bear for a minute before I spoke. “Sorry, I don’t write children’s stories.” The bear shook his head. “Oh, you’re not that kind of bear?” He shifted into a brawny man wearing a kilt (now, you’re talkin’). Then he sauntered to my side of the bed and lifted the covers to crawl in beside me. I scooted over against hubster to make room. Hubster groaned and kept on snoring. “You’re still in the wrong writer’s bedroom. I don’t write paranormal.”

“Aye, lassie, but ye will. Let me tell ye how bears came to be extinct in Scotland.”

So, that’s how I came to write my first paranormal. It’s not finished yet, but the first 20 pages finaled in the Golden Acorn Writing Contest. As soon as I finish the last book in my romantic suspense trilogy, I’ll work on this light, often humorous paranormal.

Q: Where is your favorite place to write?

I usually sit in my recliner with my laptop.

Q: What’s your next project?

I’m working on the last installment of the romantic suspense trilogy I mentioned earlier. Each book has its own romantic couple, yet has The Red Hand terrorist group creating havoc through all three. Book one, MONA LISA’S ROOM, set in Paris, released two weeks ago. RAIN IS A LOVE SONG, set in Paris, Budapest and Asheville, NC has a cover, but no release date from the publisher yet. The book I’m plugging through now is JAZZBEAT OF SURRENDER. My heroine, strong, independent woman that she is, went off on her own and got captured by The Red Hand. Next thing I knew she was taken to Syria—something I hadn’t planned on—so now I’m deep in research into the weather, topography, social attitudes of Syria. My characters rule my life, so it seems.

Q: How do you feel about Dr. Pepper?

Is he that yummy podiatrist with dimples and a get-your-sex-here swagger??? ‘Cause I could use a good foot massage…

Thanks so much for being here today, Vonnie!

About Shadow Stephens

Story telling seems to be a part of my DNA. Since childhood, I made up fantastical characters and brought them to life. Part of it was to escape the turmoils of childhood and some were just for fun. Sitting beside my couch is a constant stack of history, biographies, and compelling fiction, which means I have many overloaded bookshelves. Wouldn't that be great to have a room just full of shelves? I would love to see a wave of outstanding, self-published authors take over the market. I think it's important to own your work and take pride in it. Writing several novels and short stories, I know the trials of writing and rejection. Constructive criticism can only make you better. Never doubt yourself.

Welcome Shadow Stevens!

Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself. What do you do for fun?

I love to hike and take awesome photographs of nature and landscapes. I have a house full of animals, so they keep me occupied and entertained.

Q: What do you like most about the genre you write in?

Writing Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy gives you the opportunity to create a world that would never exist. Characters can have super human strength, be hybrids, the most evil creation, or the town drunk who’s always in jail. It’s the same concept as going to a movie; you want to be taken to a world other than your own.

Q: Where is your favorite place to write?

This is a boring answer because I always write in my living room. I have to have noise so the TV is always on. I do like to travel and experience other places to get a feel for them. Sometimes they inspire you to write a story around them.

Q: What’s your next project?

I’m working on the sequel to Broken Butterflies. This is something new for me because I have never written a series of books. There are so many stories in my head that I just want to get to the next one. I kept getting messages on Facebook asking me to keep the story going, so you asked and it’s coming together well. I’m getting excited as I write it. My characters kind of become a part of me and it’s always sad to let them go. I have the first chapter posted on my website I like to give my readers a little taste to get them as excited as I am.

Q: How do you feel about Dr. Pepper?

I’m a Pepsiholic. The Pepper is okay, but it’s not my first choice. If the folks that make Pepsi went on strike and gave us a shortage like the Twinkie situation I think I may have a break down. I can see myself on the news when I get arrested for breaking in and stealing any Pepsi that’s left.

Thanks so much for being here today, Shadow!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a great story with plenty of action, suspense, humor, and romance. The characters are interesting and the storyline is exciting. The author does a beautiful job of crafting this well-written story. I was interested and curious the whole way through. The ending is a cliffhanger to the next book, and for a book of this length, I personally prefer a real ending. However, I still loved it and am anxious to read the rest of the story. It’s definitely a five star book!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An awesome suspense novel!

Shadow Cay is a well-written nautical tale. I read one other review that said “Do NOT read this book if you are planning to sail…” and I was thinking “It would be awesome to read this while sailing!” So, I guess that’s how people differ. Either way, I loved the pacing and suspense in this book that kept me intrigued the whole way through. Excellent developed characters, exciting action, and interesting settings. Loved this book.

Tumbleweed Letters Review

When rancher and single father Cam McBride finds a letter tucked in a strip of cloth tied to a tumbleweed, he is captivated by the mysterious author. Finding a second tumbleweed letter further pulls him under the lonely writer's spell. He needs a mother for his little boy and a wife to warm his bed. Could this mysterious woman fill his needs?

Sophie Flannigan is alone, scared, and on the run from a rogue Pinkerton agent. She spends her days as a scrub lady at Madame Dora's brothel and her nights writing notes to the four winds. Her life holds little hope until a small boy lays claim to her and his handsome father proposes an advantageous arrangement.

Can these three benefit from a marriage of convenience, or will a determined Pinkerton agent destroy their fragile, newly formed bond?

My Review:

Tumbleweed Letters by Vonnie Davis

Sweet romance

I won this book in a contest and after reading Those Velvet Eyes (which I highly recommend!), I had to read this. Tumbleweed Letters is a beautiful story of two lonely people who find each other in the Dakota Territory in 1878. Since I’m from South Dakota, I can appreciate the history of the region.

I do think the story could have been expanded and the span of time increased for real love to develop. I would have liked to see the wedding instead of hearing about it afterward. Even so, parts brought tears to my eyes, parts made me laugh out loud, and I very much enjoyed the journey. Eli is adorable.

Andrew P WestonAbout Andrew P. Weston

Andrew P Weston was born in the city of Birmingham, in the UK and grew up in the towns of Bearwood and Edgbaston. He eventually attended Holly Lodge Grammar School for Boy's where he was School Captain and Head Boy. He was an active sportsperson for the school, college and a variety of rugby, martial art, swimming and athletics teams throughout the city. On graduation in 1977 he joined the Royal Marines fulfilling a number of specialist roles both in the UK and abroad.

In 1985 he became a police officer with the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary, and served in a variety of uniformed and plain clothed departments until his retirement in 2008. Over those years, he wrote and illustrated a selection of private books for his children regarding the life of a tiny kitten, called, “The Adventures of Willy Whiskers”, gained further qualifications in Law and Religious Studies, was an active member of Mensa and continued to be an active sportsperson, providing lessons free of charge to local communities.

An unfortunate accident received on duty meant Andrew had to retire early from the police force, but after moving to the sunny Greek island of Kos to speed up his recuperation, he was at last able to devote time to the “Guardian Concept” he had developed over his years in the military and police. When not writing, Andrew enjoys Greek dancing and language lessons, being told what to do by his wife, Annette, and hunting shadows in the dark. He also has a magnificent mustache collection.

Andrew is now contracted to Pagan Writers Press for three books. “Fairy Tail”, is a short, but dark and gritty erotic paranormal/thriller with a twist. The second book, “Guardian Angels” is the introductory book to the “Guardian Series”, a sci-fi action/adventure epic set in the near future. The latest short story, “Blood Moon”, is a paranormal action/thriller set in the jungles of South America. Further work on the Guardian Series and a new paranormal series, The Cambion Journals, has been completed and will hopefully be published during 2013.
